I am blessed to be able to start my mornings however I choose to.

With my last child leaving the nest several years ago, the busy mornings getting four children ready, to attend four different schools/daycare, plus myself without help because my husband would have left for work hours earlier at 5.30am, are in the distant past. Distant they may be, but they are not forgotten. It was hectic!

I remember feeling awful on the mornings when it all went to hell in a handbasket and I’d ended up yelling at one or more of the children. I hated that being the way we started our day. I hated dropping them off to school with those feelings between us. It really affected me emotionally if that’s how the day started, and it didn’t matter if we had calmed down and connected again before I dropped them at school, that feeling stayed with me all day. I felt horrible. I can only imagine what they felt like.

The way you start your day really does matter.

Ofcourse, now I know about emotional regulation, overwhelm and the real cost of perfection and just trying to do too much, alone.

As busy as I was, my kids and I would all have benefitted from a morning routine more like the one I observe now. A practice that has revolutionised the way I start my day, fostering a sense of calm, intentionality, and empowerment.

Here’s my morning routine in the order that I do it:

The Power of Setting Intentions: A mindful morning begins with a conscious decision to set intentions for the day ahead. Intentions are like guiding stars — they provide direction and purpose, shaping the way we navigate our lives. Take a moment each morning to reflect on what matters most to you. What do you hope to accomplish today? How do you want to show up in the world? By setting clear intentions, you lay the groundwork for a day filled with meaning and fulfilment.

Adopting a Positive Mindset: Our mindset plays a crucial role in shaping our experiences and perceptions of the world. Start your day on a positive note by cultivating a mindset of gratitude, optimism, and abundance. Take a few moments each morning to reflect on the things you’re grateful for, no matter how small. Practice affirmations or positive self-talk to shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. By approaching each day with a positive outlook, you invite more joy, fulfilment, and success into your life.

I set my intentions and choose my mindset before I get out of bed.

The Practice of Meditation: Meditation is a cornerstone of mindfulness, offering countless benefits for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Take a few moments each morning to sit in stillness, observing your breath and quieting the chatter of the mind. Allow yourself to be fully present, letting go of worries about the past or future. Even just a few minutes of meditation can have a profound impact, helping you cultivate inner peace and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.

Goal Setting for Success: Mindful mornings are an ideal time to revisit your goals and aspirations, ensuring that your actions align with your long-term vision for yourself. Take a few moments to review your goals, breaking them down into manageable tasks and action steps. What can you do today to move closer to your dreams? By setting specific, achievable goals for the day, you empower yourself to make meaningful progress toward the life you desire.

Movement: Movement is a powerful form of meditation, allowing us to connect with our bodies and quiet our minds. Whether it’s yoga, stretching, or a leisurely walk in nature, incorporating movement into your morning routine can help you centre yourself and cultivate presence. Focus on each breath, each movement, allowing yourself to fully inhabit the present moment. By starting your day with mindful movement, you set a positive tone for the hours ahead, priming your body and mind for whatever challenges may arise. I combine this with getting outdoors into nature, sometimes I listen to a podcast or audiobook and sometimes Imake the choice to really present and notice the beauty around me on my walk.

Connecting with Nature: Spending time in nature is a powerful way to cultivate mindfulness and foster a sense of connection with the world around us. Whether it’s taking a walk in the park, tending to your garden, or simply sitting outside and soaking in the sights and sounds of nature, make time each morning to commune with the natural world. Not only does this help reduce stress and anxiety, but it also reminds us of our interconnectedness with all living beings.

Cultivating Connection: In our hyper-connected world, it’s all too easy to start the day by diving into our smartphones, checking emails, and scrolling through social media. However, this constant barrage of information can leave us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from ourselves and others. Instead, make a conscious effort to prioritize human connection in your morning routine. Whether it’s sharing a meal with loved ones, calling a friend for a chat, or simply exchanging a smile with a stranger, fostering meaningful connections can enrich your life and enhance your sense of well-being. Personally I speak to people on my walk, saying hello, or sometimes I even call a friend who i know is also an early riser.

Hydration for Health: Water is essential for our bodies to function optimally, yet many of us start our days dehydrated, reaching for coffee before we’ve even had a sip of water. Make hydration a priority in your morning routine by starting your day with a glass of water. Not only does this help replenish fluids lost during sleep, but it also jumpstarts your metabolism and promotes overall well-being. For an added boost, try infusing your water with lemon, ginger and turmeric for it’s anti inflammatory and health benefits.

Mindful Eating for Nourishment: Breakfast is often hailed as the most important meal of the day, and for good reason. A nutritious breakfast provides the fuel your body needs to function optimally, supporting energy levels, cognitive function, and overall well-being. However, mindful eating goes beyond simply fuelling your body — it’s about tuning into your body and deciding what feels most nourishing to it, savouring each bite, tuning into your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and cultivating gratitude for the nourishment you receive. Take time to eat your breakfast mindfully, free from distractions, allowing yourself to fully enjoy the experience of nourishing your body and soul. I love to eat outside or with a view.

Avoiding Technology Overload: In today’s digital age, technology has become an integral part of our lives, offering countless benefits in terms of communication, productivity, and entertainment. However, excessive screen time can also take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being, leading to stress, anxiety, and burnout. To foster a sense of peace and presence in your morning routine, make a conscious effort to limit your exposure to technology. Instead of immediately reaching for your phone upon waking, set aside dedicated tech-free time each morning to focus on self-care, reflection, and connection. I have found it useful to charge my phone in another room so that I am not tempted to scroll or check email before getting out of bed. I also deliberately choose to sometimes just walk in nature and not listen to an audiobook or podcast, as much as i love optimising learning opportunities, a walk where I am fully present to the beauty around me is just as valuable.

There are times in our lives when our world does feel chaotic and overwhelming, mindful mornings offer a sanctuary of peace, presence, and purpose. By incorporating these few steps you might find that mornings improve for your whole household. Embrace the art of mindful mornings, and watch as your days become filled with joy, fulfillment, and meaning.
